All of northern France was covered with a solid cloud cover that extended down almost to ground level. We contacted our base in Cambrai and they said the weather there was as thick as pea soup. No chance for landing there. We\'d have to fend for ourselves. I remember when he crashed landed his B-26 after returning from a bombing mission. All his crew were killed by flak except the gunner-engineer who helped him land the plane since the co-pilot was dead. Capt. Tosi had his left arm cut open from the flak or from the ruptured plexiglass windshield and the surgeon had to pick small particles of the plexiglass from his open wound. It was a miracle that this brave officer and crewman were able to crash land the crippled airplane since most of the controls were not operating. I do not know if he received any awards for his wonderful courage and ability to complete his mission and return, but he should have received many commendations!
